Morning Devotional

Here at Bethany we recognize our mission to be motivated and guided through our faith.  Each morning we acknowledge our need for God to be present in our ministry and service.  Pastor Mary provides inspirational morning prayers that are broadcast over the PA system at both our Sioux Falls and Brandon campuses.  These prayers are to help both our residents and staff to focus their day.  You are welcome to share our morning devotions.

Pastoral Care

Rev. Dr. Mary A. Sacco is the full-time Chaplain at Bethany Homes and Bethany Meadows.  Pastor Mary was installed as Bethany Pastor/Chaplain in 2013 by the ELCA South Dakota Synod. As part of her responsibilities, Pastor Mary provides 24-hour on-call coverage for both of our campuses.  She facilitates the Sunday worship service for Bethany Home-Sioux Falls.  Pastor Mary provides integrated spiritual care along with other departments.  As chaplain, Pastor Mary leads and organizes Bible studies, prayer groups, worship services, support groups, and individual visits.

Pastor Mary was ordained in 1984 and is a rostered clergy member of the ELCA South Dakota Synod.  Over the past thirty years she has served as pastor for congregations in Illinois, Iowa, and South Dakota.  Pastor Mary also has an equally long history in clinical pastoral ministry.  She is a Certified Supervisor of the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education and has served in clinical settings in Chicago, Minneapolis, Atlanta, and New York.  Pastor Mary has provided spiritual care for residents and patients as well as teaching clergy of all faiths how to be chaplains.  She has been the Director of Pastoral Care at Emory University Psychiatric Hospital and New York Cornell Medical Center Psychiatric Hospital; and, Vice-President of Religion and Health at Good Samaritan Hospital.  Pastor Mary’s experience in both parish and clinical ministry is a strength that she brings to Bethany.  Pastor Mary also has a Doctor of Ministry in Healthcare which compliments her professional experience.

Pastor Mary graduated from St. Francis University with a Bachelor of Arts degree.  She then graduated from Luther Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree.  In I990 she completed her Doctor of Ministry in Healthcare from Bethany Theological Seminary.  In 1992 she was fully certified as a Supervisor with the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education.

A Stitch & A Prayer

Chaplain Mary started this quilting group July 2013.  She recruited Bethany Meadows residents, stressing that volunteers did not know how to sew.  Over the past two years we have had a committed group of women who do various jobs needed in making quilts:  sewing, ironing fabric, cutting fabric, and tying quilts.Quilting and prayer have much in common.  Both provide comfort and warmth, while surrounding us in love.

Quilter’s Prayer:  Gracious God, guide my hands to work as Your hands, to know the power of Your love in every quilt I help to make.  May my hands be guided by the same love and care with every quilt we make, knowing that this love and care was and is and will continue to be a gift of blessing.  Amen.

Over the past two years we have completed 28 Quilts of Valor for wounded veterans; 56 lap quilts for our residents at Bethany Home Brandon; 12 quilts for the Ronald McDonald House; and, 53 quilts for the Linus Project – an organization that distributes quilts to children in our Sioux Falls hospitals.
